Comprovisation Course for Young Composers and/or Musicians

2014-05-19

July 2-6, 2014 Viitasaari, Finland

Comprovisation offers a set of techniques for uniting the composer's and the player's approach in making new music together. Comprovisation draws equally on techniques from written composition and from structured improvisation, distilled from music traditions around the globe. In this course, composers will learn ways of understanding and working with different degrees of freedom and responsibility in their scores, while musicians will learn techniques of improvising within flexible forms and rules, especially in ensemble improvisation, or in working with real-time computer processing. Over the past 20 years, Sandeep Bhagwati has developed a wide range of comprovisational techniques, software models and concepts which he will creatively share with the participants.

Daily sessions will include lectures, demonstrations by musicians present at the festival, score-reading sessions (e.g. by the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart), discussions of the participants' work, and creative exploration. All students will attend all sessions together, and there will be a workshop performance at the end, where composers and musicians will collaborate in trying out some comprovisation concepts in their own work.

Course fees:

Possibility for dormitory accommodation 125€ per 5 nights.
