Cultural Innovation International Prize

2015-02-05

Introduction

The Cultural Innovation International Prize is a biennial competition organised by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona(hereafter CCCB) with the aim of incentivising projects that explore the potential cultural scenarios of the coming years through research and practice. The first call for entries ties in with the 20th anniversary of the CCCB and is being held in partnership with Audiences Europe Network, a working platform that brings together cultural institutions and organisations from different European countries with the aim of fostering reflection on audiences in the sphere of culture.

Call for entries and subject of the prize

Each call for entries will propose a theme for the competing projects to work on. The chosen theme for the first call for entries for 2014-2015 is AUDIENCE/S:

In recent years, there has been ongoing research in the cultural sphere into ways of adapting to the changes experienced by the concept of the «audience»: What do we understand today by audience/s at cultural centres, museums and similar spaces? What is the meaning of this concept at a time when the borders between physical and virtual space are being diluted, intermixed or blurred? Has the classic paradigm, according to which the audience followed and, at best, took part in the initiatives of centres and museums from a secondary position, been altered? Which new models are currently being applied to this sphere? What are the real needs of these new audiences? Do centres and museums satisfy them? What innovations could they introduce in order to fulfil their mission? What changes are necessary in order to meet the challenge of audience/s over the coming years?

Entrants for the Prize are required to submit a project that will create, produce and/or feature cultural contents. The format, subject and/or management methods must provide an innovative response to these or other related questions. The projects submitted must have a theoretical basis and present an analysis of their specific sphere of intervention, according to the guidelines set out in point 8- Requisite documents.

Conditions of entry

The following persons are eligible to enter for the Prize:

Natural persons aged 18 or over living in any country, regardless of nationality. They can submit an entry individually or as a group. In the latter case, the group must appoint a representative in writing should they be selected for the Prize.
Legal persons: not-for-profit associations, cooperatives, foundations and organisations from any country. They must appoint a representative in writing should they be selected for the Prize.

The following persons are not eligible to enter the Prize:

Employees of the CCCB, partners and the sponsor of the Prize, members of the jury and the technical commission appointed by the CCCB.
For-profit businesses or organisations.

Only one project per natural person (or group) or legal person can be submitted.

Entries will not be accepted after the registration and submission deadline, as set out in point 5- Calendar.

The projects submitted must be previously unpublished. All entrants guarantee that they are the authors or owners of the project, that it is an original work, and they hold all the necessary intellectual property rights in order to submit an entry for the Prize. They also guarantee that they have received permission from the persons featured in the project or third parties who have produced any of its contents (graphics, audiovisuals and others).

By submitting their project, the authors or rights holders undertake not to withdraw it from the competition.

Entries that do not comply with the submission guidelines shall be disqualified.

Prize

The winning entrant –project author, authors or rights holders– will receive 10,000 € in prize money. This amount is subject to the tax deductions established by the law currently in force. The prize money will be paid by bank transfer only, following the deduction of tax (where appropriate).

In the case of group submissions, the payment will be made to the appointed representative of said group who will be responsible for paying the other members, thereby exempting the CCCB from this responsibility.

The CCCB reserves the right to choose whether to carry out the project, or not, within a two-year period. The decision will be taken by the CCCB, and the winner informed no later than six months after the Prize has been awarded.

Project selection process and composition of the jury

A technical commission designated by the CCCB will read all the projects that have been accepted, write a report about each one and select ten shortlisted entrants. The ten projects will be submitted to a jury specialising in the field of the call for entries and they will select the winning project. The jury can declare the prize null and void or choose a joint prize-winner.

The jury shall be appointed at the discretion of the CCCB. Its decisions, including the selection of the winning entrant/s, will be adopted by a simple majority. The jury's deliberations will not be disclosed. The CCCB shall not be accountable for the opinions expressed by the jury or any of its members, before or after the final decision, with regard to any of the projects presented, without prejudice to the contents of the final outcome of the competition. The CCCB will act as the secretariat and appoint the secretary who will assist the jury and draw up the minutes of the sessions during the project selection process.

Selection criteria

The jury will award the prize to the most innovative project based on the following criteria:

  • Originality of the proposal. The project must show outstanding "innovative" qualities, in absolute terms, or bring together, for the first time, established themes, genres, formats or management models.
  • Conceptual and methodological rigour. The project must be underpinned by a coherent theoretical framework and the appropriate tools and methods must be used in its proposed implementation. The project must also demonstrate it can provide the solutions to the problems and questions raised.
  • Innovations in ways of relating to the audience. Special consideration will be given to those proposals that resignify and transform the conventional ways museums and cultural centres relate to the community by bringing new ways of making an increasingly active and participative audience an integral part of their dynamics for creating, managing and distributing contents.
  • Cross-cutting interventions and methods. Special consideration will be given to those proposals that express a desire to incorporate, into the cultural sphere, processes, methods and dynamics that are characteristic of other fields and disciplines that may enrich and facilitate the relationship between cultural institutions and the community.
  • Social impact of the project. Special consideration will be given to those proposals that are underpinned by a desire to serve the audience and geared to narrowing the existing gaps in the socio-cultural sphere and which encourage the use and care of (physical and virtual) community spaces.
  • Project viability. The project presented must be economically and organisationally viable.
