Björn Sikström
With wide spanning interests and an open mind Björn Sikström embraces a range of different expressions, from the simple to the complex and abstract. In his compositions he explores both music itself and his own relation to it. Born in 1979 in Luleå Sweden, Björn began studying composition in 2002 and recieved his Master’s degree in composition in 2010, after several years of studies under Professor Jan Sandström at the Institution of Music and Media, formerly known as the Piteå College of Music, at the Luleå University of Technology. In his final year of studies he completed his orchestral piece ‘Sun’ composed for Gävle Symphony orchestra, and his Master’s Thesis ‘New creative solutions for the concept of melody through awareness of melodic traditions’.
In the summer of 2010 Björn attended the New Music Incubator workshops in Kalv and Gothenburg, both in Sweden. During 2011 his piece Dust/Dew for flute and piano reached at final position in the 2011 DuoSolo Emerging Composer competition. During the same year Björn participated in the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy and a workshop with the Esbjerg Ensemble, Denmark, and the Baltic Youth Philharmonic Composers Workshop, that was held in Lithuania. He has also participaded in the St Magnus Composers Course (Orkney Islands) in 2012 and the Microtonal Workshop at the International PASImusic Festival in Finland 2015. Having composed for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles in different contexts, including orchestra, chamber opera, wind band, organ, choir, guitar trio, percussion, various chamber ensembles, solo pieces and electro acoustic music, Björn is a curious composer who delightfully embraces all instruments and combinations of those.
